Oral Hygiene With Braces

Is Your Child Sporting New Braces?
Make Sure Their Teeth and Gums Get Special Attention!

Interdental Toothbrush

oral-hygiene-with-braces
A Proxabrush is an interdental (between the teeth) toothbrush that your child may use to clean underneath and around their wires and braces. Remind them to use the Proxabrush gently to avoid damaging their wires. The Proxabrush will help them to clean their braces while maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

Antibacterial Mouthwash

Peroxyl, a hydrogen peroxide antiseptic mouth rinse, will reduce inflammation to your child’s gums and cheeks. Peroxyl helps to prevent infection and decrease the irritation that may develop from their braces. Just like using peroxide for a cut or scrape, Peroxyl helps the inside of your child’s mouth heal. Peroxyl can be used for general irritation caused by their braces or for canker sores, cheek bites and other minor temporary gum injuries.

Instructions
Your child should use Peroxyl up to four times daily following their schedule for brushing: after meals (or after school) and before bed. Please remind them to rinse their mouths each time with two teaspoons of Peroxyl (half a capful) for one minute and then to spit it out.

Topical Fluoride

Phos-Flur is a sodium fluoride gel that helps prevent tooth decay while your child wears braces. It kills bacteria and replaces vital minerals in tooth enamel that have been exposed to harmful acids. The use of Phos-Flur does not replace daily brushing and flossing; children and teens in braces should use it following their night time cleaning schedule.

Instructions
Have your child or teen squeeze a small strip of Phos-Flur on a toothbrush and apply it to their teeth for one minute and then spit it out. Don’t allow them to eat or drink for 30 minutes after they use Phos-Flur. It is important for the active ingredient to stay on their teeth for 30 minutes without disruption. Eating and drinking will interrupt the treatment.

Cleaning Their Removable Appliance

Remind children to brush their removable appliance every day as a part of their regular brushing and flossing schedule. Because food particles and plaque can accumulate on their appliance just as they do on their teeth, they should soak the appliance daily.

Instructions
Dissolve a Polident, Efferdent or other denture-cleaning tablet in a glass of tap water at room temperature and instruct your child to soak their appliance once every day. Their appliance will taste better, and soaking will help to prevent the plaque and bacterial build up that can result in bad breath and cavities!
