Braces today are a lot different than they used to be. Braces in the “old days” wrapped around the whole tooth, and really gave meaning to the name “train track mouth!”
But today, braces are lighter, smaller, and more comfortable. We use the most technologically advanced self-ligating brackets and super-elastic wires. They come in clear and metal, with or without colors. When you come in for your free consultation with Dr. Petrover, he’d be happy to discuss with you what options are best for you.
Braces exert gentle pressure on teeth over time, gradually moving them into new positions, creating a healthier bite and a more beautiful smile. How does it work? The wire that connects the brackets gently puts pressure on your teeth to move them. That’s the basic principle behind all braces, but today high-tech brackets and wires make this process easier than ever.
Orthodontic treatment and braces usually takes about 18 to 24 months, though this will vary depending on your individual case. At Petrover Orthodontics, we often finish our patients before their scheduled times, however, and your cooperation in keeping your appointments and taking care of your teeth and braces may help you finish your treatment earlier than expected.
You can play just about any sport with braces. Just look at Jeremy Evans win the 2012 NBA Slam Dunk Contest while wearing braces! We recommend wearing a mouth guard when participating in certain sports.
Your braces will be attached quickly and easily to your teeth – no shots, no medicine, no pain. The braces will feel a little awkward at first and the teeth may be tender or sensitive to pressure. This is completely normal and will go away in no time. It may feel as though the braces are “sticking out,” but this sensation will also soon pass.
Small pieces of orthodontic wax may be used if the braces irritate your cheeks. You may find it more comfortable to eat softer foods for the first few days while you are becoming accustomed to eating with your new braces.
Most patients choose to take over the counter pain relievers for the first few days of treatment to lessen the discomfort. To ensure the best results, take the medications after your appointment and before meals.
Food! You can eat most foods with braces, but we tell patients to avoid foods that are sticky, hard or chewy. Eating these foods may cause damage to your braces, requiring you to come in for extra visits to make repairs and making your treatment time longer. We know our patients want to finish treatment as soon as possible – so stay away from the Skittles and Laffy Taffy.
You can take care of your braces by taking good care of your teeth. That means brushing and flossing after every meal. If a bracket or wire is broken, make an appointment as soon as possible to have it repaired.
Retainers help keep your teeth straight after the completion of treatment. They keep your teeth from moving out of their new positions.
You should continue to see your dentist every 6 months or as directed by your dentist during orthodontic treatment for routine dental checkups and cleanings.
Braces and orthodontics isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. That means that the cost of your treatment will vary based on the complexity of the orthodontic problem and the estimated length of your time in braces.
Since each patient’s orthodontic problems are different, a visit to our office for a complimentary examination will allow you to get a better idea of the fee. We offer flexible payment plans for braces with no down payment and low monthly payments that make orthodontic care affordable.
